Student Services

"Without an education, one will minimize their potential and become dependent and stagnated in an evolving world." GMA

"It's a new dawning, a new beginning, capture the moments to shape, mold and build the minds and character of our children."

Welcome

Welcome to the Student Services Department of St. James Parish Public Schools. SJPPSS is pleased to present the Student Services Department (SSD) with its mission and goals.

We are proud of SSD's many documented outcomes in supporting youth and families, building school capacity, and helping to achieve district-wide academic goals. However, we recognize that we must do much more to accomplish the district's strategic plan goals. SSD specifically seeks to achieve increased student attendance, increased student achievement, and increased pro-social student behaviors so that all students can become high achieving, life-long and joyful learners.

E. E. Cummings said, "To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else - means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting." As a comprehensive team, we will ensure that our students never stop fighting for excellence.

As we reflect on what has been and examine where we are now, let us look to tomorrow with the anticipation that things will be better.

Mission

The mission of SJPPSS Student Services Department is to ensure a coordinated system of supports and resources that, in partnership with family and stakeholders, foster safe and caring learning environments where all students flourish.

Goals

SJPPSS Student Services Department is committed to achieving three goals aligned with the district's strategic plan:

  • Increase student attendance
  • Increase student achievement
  • Increase pro-social student behaviors

Focal Areas
Each focal area has shared responsibility for our comprehensive services, both at the school-site and at the district level.

Intervention and Prevention: This offers a variety of prevention and intervention programs and services including various research based health and wellness programs and professional development. Our intervention programs assist sites with improving attendance and addressing behavior concerns.

We offer support to sites through the following Student Support Service Staff: Counselors, School District Nurses, School Health Workers, Site Nutrition Coordinators, Transportation Assistant and Truancy Liaison.

Social Services: In an effort to support the academic and social emotional needs of our students, the Focus of Counseling and Social Services aims to enhance professional development and support for our on-site student support service staff.

Families and Communities: This focus area assists the school sites in supporting students learning during the out of school time hours. The emphasis is on providing parent/caregiver outreach, building partnerships with community based organizations and parish departments and ensuring quality after school programs are available for all students.
